TRAPPED.

The big man pushed through the undergrowth in the forest mumbling, "They should have kept me in. I got skills. Twats." He bent down and chose a particular plant, peeled off the small leaves and ate them. "They don't know what they're missin'."

He eventually took a rest on a fallen tree, and stared into the distance, still fuming.

Presently, a white bird swooped in front of him and landed on a rock. It stood and looked at him, cocking its head to one side. He picked up a stone and threw it. "What's a fukin' gull doing in the forest?"

"Squawk."

"Sure. Squawk to you too. Whadda you want?"

The bird launched and flew overhead, shedding a slimy load on the man's head.

"Oh for shit sake," he yelled. "What a terrific day. Covered in crap, cast out and crapped on. Bollox." He picked some dry leaves to wipe it off, but it smeared instead. Then he spotted a small skink. He brought his right hand near his nose and twitched, saying, "Damn Squid shit. Damn bird shit." He flicked his left hand over the skink, and missed. "Balls. I have to find water, and wash this off. Ain't gunna eat with that smell."

He looked around to find moss on the north side of a tree. It was a huge she-oak, and he knew there was a good chance of finding a reservoir. Sure enough, he saw a line of ants. He studied them. They marched to and from the join of two branches, and in there, he found a puddle of water. Ignoring their hot feet on his arm, he scooped in and washed his hands, and smelled his palm. It was a little better, so he moved from one tree to the next and washed until his hands and arm were clean. "Better. Now I can feed."

He ate dandelions, wild asparagus, and shea nuts, then topped it off with a couple of skinks and some orthoptera of various kinds.

Knowing there was a better chance to find running water in a valley, he headed downhill northwards.

While resting again, this time with a belly that sloshed with fresh spring water, he heard a noise. Thub thub thub, grind, thub, grind, and a whistling, followed by a distant bang that reverberated through the trees. He stopped. "Oh shit." He felt guilty and worried. Then he heard a cry. A voice carried on the wind. It faded and returned, then faded again.

The gull came back. It swooped in front of him and sped into the distance. Then it returned and swooped again.

He studied it and thought, Surely it's not telling me to follow. Gulls are too stupid.

Nevertheless, it seemed to head in the direction of the voice, and he followed.

As he stumbled on through the undergrowth, the cries became louder. He started shouting back, "Who's there? Where are you?"

Cassie heard the voice and clammed up.

He yelled louder. Then in his haste, he slipped on a fallen branch. His foot got rammed between two stout branches. He was stuck hard.
